Sonoma county based AYA cartridges of Sonoma Cannabis Co. takes an interesting approach to marketing their pre-filled oil cartridges. Each of their four, functionally named cartridge offerings combine two strains to produce an oil for different uses, occupying all spots on the spectrum from sativa to hybrid to indica. Along with available shipping to anywhere in California via The Goddess Delivers, AYA offers a 90 percent sativa ‘Awaken’ cartridge made of two sativa strains, a sativa leaning ‘Inspire’, an indica leaning ‘Relax’, and finally an indica/CBD combination ‘Slumber’ cartridge. The exact pair of strains that go into each type varies with each batch, but always maintains a certain sativa/indica/CBD profile. Each cartridge will come in a box labeled with the specific strains used. The packaging is worth mentioning in this case, since each variety is sold in a box with some fairly impressive art on the front, featuring a beautifully depicted raven, owl, elk, and bear for each variety respectively.
This review focuses specifically on the Slumber variety, which comes equipped with a 90 percent indica profile. In the past I’ve had a batch of Slumber that was a combination of Blackberry Kush and Harlequin, but this time it was the indica strain Diamond OG mixed with Sour Tsunami, a variety of Sour Diesel bred for high CBD content.
The cartridge also comes in a smaller tube that shows partial results of SC Labs testing, in terms of THC, CBD, and CBN content. Slumber offers a unique 2:3 THC to 1:3 CBD ratio, with different precise percentages depending on the batch. The exact numbers for this box were 35.29% THC and 10.86% CBD. If that isn’t enough information for you, the SC Labs sticker also shows an ID number that allows you to look up the full results for your batch in terms of cannabinoid potency, terpene content, residual solvents, and microbiological testing, on the SC Labs website.
The result is a best of both worlds combination of indica and CBD features, an ideal choice for a stress relieving, pain-relieving, sleep-inducing cannabis option. If you’ve ever had a tough time choosing between a heavy indica and a 50/50 ratio, high-CBD strain, this is something to try.
To sweeten the deal, AYA says its product is sustainably and organically farmed with no pesticides or chemicals, in the Sonoma valley - not far from where some of California’s greatest wines are produced. They also responded quickly to an email inquiry to clarify that there are no solvents such as propylene glycol in their products whatsoever.
The ratio of THC to CBD produces interesting results. You can certainly feel the classic effects of indica-leaning cannabis in Slumber. Unlike some 1:1 CBD strains, you’re not likely to feel that this is really lacking. It isn’t the strongest ever in terms of raw THC strength, but it is strong enough. Many weaker oils offer THC percentages only slightly higher than Slumber’s 36 percent, and without the CBD content to justify this and to compensate. In addition to a respectable THC effect, Slumber offers the sedative and pain relieving qualities of CBD. Not only does CBD offer its own anti-anxiety properties, but it can temper the anxiety inducing side effects of THC, making Slumber a perfectly balanced choice. More so than any other strain or oil I’ve ever tried, Slumber is a good choice for anxiety, stress, and insomnia. While anything with THC might not be the best choice for severe anxiety or panic attacks, Slumber is a great remedy for low grade anxiety and stress.
The taste is pungent, but also smooth, earthy, and a little bit woody, yet hashy as well. Like other indicas, the effects tend to creep in after a solid 5 to 10 minutes, but with the CBD rounding out the smooth edges of the THC, it never comes to that slightly alarming peak that other ‘creepers’ often do. When the effects settle in, they are warm, cozy, comfy, and easygoing. If pain-relief is what you're using this product for, the effects are noticeable – a bit stronger than the subtle pain relief of a normal indica strain, and more noticeable than CBD alone. As the name suggests, it is great for the final vape of the night - yawn inducing, and without the stimulating, heart-racing effects that can make it hard to go to sleep.
Slumber offers a unique experience in a cannabis universe that normally has every conceivable offering covered in 3 different ways. Again, it is not only great for sleep as the name implies, but is also ideal for pain, and for any anxiety prone consumers to get a calmer version of the THC experience. The taste is great, and the oil is clean and solvent free. For me, Slumber is an optimal choice for everything but sheer strength. For that, I will be trying more of AYA’s offerings, the rest of which don’t sacrifice THC content for CBD. Nonetheless, Slumber is great for any situation in which you don’t want the more overwhelming effects of THC, for anxiety prone consumers, and for easing insomnia.
