The award-winning Ghost OG is a somewhat stoney, slightly indica-leaning OG known for a nice balance between both the indica and sativa elements. Much of what people love about Ghost OG overlaps with the appeal of other classic OG Kush strains, but it has some other special features and distinguishing characteristics as well.
Nasha’s unpressed Cherry Pie hash is a contender for the strongest hash I’ve had the chance to try since moving to California more than 2 years ago. But, its appeal also goes beyond sheer strength. Instead of hitting like a ton of bricks, it takes effect gradually, allowing you plenty of time to settle in comfortably.
As with the rest of the Kush family, Master Kush traces its roots back to two strains from the Hindu Kush region. In fact, this strain hasn’t strayed genetically far from these roots, since both of its parents are landrace strains from this part of the world. The effects of the strain are considered to be an exemplary hallmark of the Kush strains - and indica more generally - with a predominant body effect that is great for relieving anxiety, insomnia, and pain.
Doctor Tahoe is an indica-leaning hybrid, with genetics from two strains in the popular OG family, Tahoe OG and the lesser known Doc’s OG. The result of this blend is a relaxing and mellow strain without the heavy-hitting sleepiness and couchlock of heavier indicas. With these traits, and a familiar mild piney and sour lemon aroma, the strain is really a great example of what people love about the OG Kush family of strains.
Blue Dream is legendary strain, but unlike many other legendary strains, such as Blueberry, Northern Lights, or Sour Diesel, Blue Dream is a product of the 21st century. With relatively recent origins, and having achieved its current celebrity status in just the last 5 years or so, Blue Dream has been adopted as a flagship strain by the current generation of cannabis fans from the novice to the connoisseur.
Superglue is a deceptively balanced hybrid strain with surprisingly heavy indica origins and a distinctive taste profile. This Superglue was ordered from Goddess Delivers delivery service, and in this case was an indoor batch from Funxional Farms. Delicious and well rounded, this strain is likely to appeal to almost any cannabis fan.
Gold Drops is a highly regarded company, having won more than 28 awards in just two years, including industry awards at the High Times Cannabis Cup and HempCon. Much of that attention has been for their potent shatter, but they also offer pre-filled oil cartridges, which just so happened to come highly recommended at my dispensary.
Grape Ape typically offers a mellow indica body experience, but without heavy couch lock or sleepiness, blending genetics from hallmark indicas Mendocino Purps and Afghani with the classic hybrid, Skunk. The result is a balanced body effect with a focus on relaxation and stress relief over heavier properties like couch lock, sleepiness, and lethargy. Leafly traces Grape Ape’s origins to Apothecary Genetics and Barney’s Farm.
All vaporizers use either conduction or convection heating methods. However, the G Pen Elite uses both conduction and convection to heat cannabis. What does this mean exactly?
In conduction vaporizers, a heating source touches cannabis directly. This allows for more instantaneous temperature control and usually makes for a less expensive unit.
The new Blue Zkittlez strain arrived on the scene just this year, combining genetics from thepurple indica strain Zkittlez with those of the indica Blue Diamond. While labeled an indica dominant strain with predominantly indica leaning genetics, Blue Zkittlez offers some noticeable sativa-like properties alongside the more reliable sedative and body-focused indica effects.
When it comes to a beer and strain pairing, summer is time for a refreshing and relaxing combination that allows you to enjoy the outdoors – something calming, but that won’t have you falling asleep on the beach and waking up with terrible sunburn. Maybe something good for stress, but also on the lighter side so you won’t blow off that hike you’ve been planning.
Sativa-dominant AK-47 is a famous and widely loved strain. Despite its sativa-leaning genetics - with roots going back to Columbian, Thai, and Mexican landrace sati vas - AK-47 is a mellow take on the alert, social, classic sativa buzz. The genetics do, after all, include some Afghani indica. AK-47 offers an interesting set of contrasts between uplifting and mellow effects, sour and sweet aromas, and indica and sativa genetics.
Purple Punch is a heavy hitting, yet also forgiving and versatile, evening strain that brings together indica classic Granddaddy Purple with a southern Californian OG hybrid favorite, Larry OG. While the strain qualifies as a somewhat heavy indica experience, it also offers an element of cerebral, functional effect, making it somewhat more nuanced than the super-heavy, couchlock inducing indica strains.
LA Confidential is a renowned, award-winning strain with roots in the early 2000s. It has won several awards, including best indica at the 2004 Cannabis Cup and the 2006 High Times strain of the year. The strain offers a pure indica heritage with an Afghani landrace indica strain on side, and OG LA Affie on the other. OG LA Affie is itself developed from a Pakistani indica landrace alongside other strains. As you might expect, LA Confidential packs a familiar indica punch. But on top of that, it offers some thought-provoking, cerebral effects, often described as mildly psychedelic. In this case, we reviewed POP Natural’s pre-filled vape cartridge with CO2 oil from LA Confidential.
Lola Lola cartridges come from cannabis grown in Mendocino County. The brand is known for their eye-catching, approachable packaging design - which has art that reminds me of a happier, peaceful, non-disturbing version of a Hieronymus Bosch painting - but my interest revolves around the “first generation, single-origin terpenes” the brand reintroduces to their CO2 oil.
I’ve written here before that I’m not the biggest fan of edibles. I try them every now and then, but their level of unpredictability is a little much for me. Sometimes a double dose leaves me wondering why nothing happens, other times a single dose of the same edible puts me way past where I want to be, into a non-functional state. I’ve tried to track what variables are involved here – empty stomach, whether I’ve smoked or consumed previously that day – but it’s still a mystery. There are few circumstances in life when I find that level of uncertainty acceptable in terms of cannabis.
Pre-filled vape cartridges have enjoyed a boom in recent years that shows no signs of stopping. This means cartridge makers have had an incentive to branch out, appealing to specific demands and niches of the market. Some cartridges focus on terpene content, or - the increasingly in-demand - CBD content, while yet others take innovative approaches like using aromatherapy oils like lavender to create a custom taste and terpene profile. Bumblebee cartridges in particular satisfy a timeless, and recurring demand in the cannabis market: raw THC content.
The contributions of the east coast to the cannabis world are all too easily forgotten in this new era of legalization, emerging in the west. But one classic strain – arguably NYC’s flagship strain - is likely to keep the Big Apple on the cannabis map for years to come. In my own observation, Sour Diesel strains have long been the sativa of choice for the northeast, where high-end strains are most often indica-leaning hybrids. Until Blue Dream came along, Sour Diesel was probably the most common of a small handful of high-test sativa strains floating around. NYC diesel is considered the cream of that crop.
Sonoma county based AYA cartridges takes an interesting approach to marketing their pre-filled oil cartridges. Each of their four, functionally named cartridge offerings combine two strains to produce an oil for different uses, occupying all spots on the spectrum from sativa to hybrid to indica. Along with available shipping to anywhere in California via The Goddess Delivers, AYA offers a 90 percent sativa ‘Awaken’ cartridge made of two sativa strains, a sativa leaning ‘Inspire’, an indica leaning ‘Relax’, and finally an indica/CBD combination ‘Slumber’ cartridge.
For this week’s pairing we are combining the indica dominant hybrid Berry White with anotherSierra Nevada beer. This time we are going to try out Sierra Nevada’s Old Chico Crystal Wheat, a beer that breaks out of the craft beer norm to mix high quality with high drinkability. This pairing is fun and easygoing, and great for almost any occasion.
