Being from Mississauga, Canada - located in the central part of the Greater Toronto area - it may seem odd that Ramriddlz sounds almost like a Jamaican R&B artist. Known for his comedic word play and the interesting ways in which he uses a medley of fruits as sexual metaphors in his songs, Ramriddlz is truly a unique artist and a natural comedian. Many people may know Ramriddlz from his viral video hit “Sweeterman” (currently has 1.2 million views on youtube). If the title “Sweeterman” sounds familiar, that's probably because you have heard Drake’s remix of the song that debuted on OVO radio back in 2015. Seeing as Ramriddlz aka Mr. Ramrod, and Drake both hail from the Toronto area, it doesn’t come as a surprise that Drake was quick to pick up on the wave. In fact, even though I might be in the minority for saying this, Ramriddlz and “Sweeterman” seem to have possibly been a catalyst for Drake adopting the Dancehall/ Reggae/ R&B style that took the globe by storm in the form of his songs “One Dance” and “Controlla” - the former, was streamed over one billion times on Spotify alone.
Although Drake may receive credit for re - popularizing the Dancehall/R&B wave in the United States, and even globally (picking up where the likes Sean Kingston and Sean Paul left off), we may really have Ramriddlz to thank. Currently, Ramriddlz has dropped two projects, the first was entitled “P2P” (or Pussy Too Pink) and was released in 2015, and more recently “Venis” which was released this past year. Since he dropped “Sweeterman”, Ramriddlz has grown immensely as an artist, and his latest project “Venis” really showcases that - it was actually one of my personal favorites during all of 2016 - as it was a solid project and included two great singles in “Hey Mr. Ramrod” and “Bodmon. With his recent success Ramriddlz looks to continue his momentum into 2017 with the release of a brand new visual.
Last week, the 23 year old, Canadian born R&B artist debuted the video for his single “H2O” -shot by Charlton Visuals and directed by Tunnel Vision TO. Sticking with his recurring cover art theme of sexualized images of fruits - a few of which resemble vaginas (see the cover for “Venis”) - the artwork for the single “H2O” is a watermelon slice, filled with actual water instead of the regular pink interior (once you hear the song and watch the video you’ll understand why). The opening scene of the video takes place in Mumbai, India on a pier by the ocean, with the sounds of a sitar playing in the background, and features a cameo from the famous Toronto YouTube comedian JusReign who plays a guide / Guru to Ram, who he teaches to become “wetter than water". Donning his signature pineapple chain Ramriddlz and the director create a funny fruit filled, pool party themed video that perfectly complements the feel good vibe of the song. Throughout the video, and the song itself, Ram uses his wittiness and word play to throw some clever jokes (names himself “Ramindeep” in the video) at the viewer - some of my favorite lines include “Poseidon when I dive in”, “Budweiser/ coochie geyser/ cuz i pipe her with my sniper/ she spit on it like cypher/ and she ride on my cocky like biker”, and of course who doesn’t love the catchy hook “I get her wetter than water, dihydrogen monoxide when I’m in those thighs”. Starting off the year on a high note, watch out for Ramriddlz in 2017 and check out the video to “H2O” below.
