In August I had the opportunity to catch one of my favorite record labels throw down on top of a Target, H&M, Zara, and more. At the heart of downtown LA, Stones Throw was invited to make the crowd move on a Friday evening to get Angelinos ready for the weekend. This beautiful event was among a handful of similar shows presented by FigAt7th, the shopping complex where the aforementioned shops rested. For a number of Fridays during the summer, dope vibes filled the atmosphere - this one was my favorite.

Stones Throw was in full-effect with founder/CEO Peanut Butter Wolf (center) alongside two of his funkiest label signees - Mayer Hawthorne (left) and Dam-Funk (right). These guys inspire the shit out of me. There wasn't a moment when there wasn't a smile on stage. They constantly touched base with the crowd and interacted as if they were playing us new music in our living room. You just get this feeling with Stones Throw that music is truly the motive, not money, not fame, just good music. Much of what the trio played was stuff from their personal collections - a lot of soul and funk - from various periods in time, old to new. They didn't play much of their own music, if it all, and followed up or preceded many of the records with short anecdotes that made the experience that much better and more homey.

Unlike most DJ sets, the guys were exclusively spinning 45s. For the young readers, these are vinyl records that spin at 45 RPM (revolutions per minute). At just seven inches in diameter, these records were used primarily for singles as opposed to albums. And they were spun on actual record players - not Seratos and digital platforms. Sounded like heaven.

The grandmaster behind Stones Throw. This man's ear for talent is impeccable. And he doesn't give a shit if you disagree with his choices in music or otherwise. All the respect.

Dam-Funk was pretty low-key throughout the performance. And if you know his music, that wouldn't come to be much of a surprise. He's an extremely well-put together individual. Very suave. You'll never see him sweat. But damn, did he have the jams.

Peep the penguin! Tuxedo, albeit just with their frontman, was present in spirit through that little swanky penguin. Power to the penguin.
